Soderkaker (Shantytown) focuses on the relationship between a wealthy merchant and his less-wealthy live-in buddy, a stonemason. The impoverished friend wants his son to marry the merchant's daughter, but this is rendered impossible by social barriers. Said barriers come tumbling down when the stonemason cooks up a strategy to save the merchant's heavily-in-debt business. Thus is the heroine saved from a loveless marriage with the local banker. With such an unoriginal plotline, Soderkaker must rely on the its talented cast (including the popular Edvard Person) to sustain audience interest.
